Title: double trouble

We started two truck builds the other day..I'll try to keep this thread going as we build.

Under way

I've had a hard enough time getting 1 bike done. I can't imagine trying to get all the fabrication and everything done on 2 trucks. Looks good so far, can't wait to see the finished products.

Bruce, did you buy a tubing bender?  If so, which one?  What are you planning on for motors?
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Bruce on April 14, 2014, 05:52:47 PM
I didn't buy one rick but I'm going to..we had the parts bent up out west at a bike fabricator.
One bikes getting simplex so it should be a pig...the other either a gc190 or a whizzer engine with electric start... That's because I don't wanna try and do a kick start on the whizzer.
One thing I don't like is the simplex stand for mounting the rear wheels...may salter the look and shape of those.  I tried a set from 3\16 and they're just too funky for me.
It may be their height(with the back of the bike at 7 13\16 which DW gave me for a height there).
I have a third frame and may space the two front bars apart more...moving it closer to the seat to increase the height on the top bar...that would help.
For now, these two are going together as is.

Nice start!
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Bruce on April 15, 2014, 05:44:37 AM
one bikes getting two worksman wheels w/drums on the rear and a sportsman 27" front w/drum...that ones gonna have the simplex engine so we are gonna hafta get tricky with the pulley sizes because both bikes are using whizzer sheaves  and that engine isnt torquey. The other has two worksman wheels with moped drums laced into them in the rear and another moped hub for the front is gonna be put in another wheel...that drums bigger  so the bike should have plenty of stopping power.
Looking now into getting a box built ,maybe aluminum and probably one will have the slant back.
anyhow I'll take a few more pics later after I go hack off those rear wheel stands.

That's a lot better , Bruce .
Thanks for that . :)

And , those wheels look good to me . I like the idea of being able to stop .

Pete . :)
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Bruce on May 09, 2014, 04:09:39 PM
Yup...those mopeds all haul to a halt fast so 3 of these on the trike ought to get the job done...these have 1\2" axles too. Rugged little bugger's
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Bruce on May 11, 2014, 02:41:46 PM
I trued and tightened the wheels now...isn't too hard to do  really..I better finish the bracing next few days and get this ready for sandblasting and paint
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: pd on May 15, 2014, 12:53:53 PM
Paint ?

No Powder coat ?

Pete . :)
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: relic on May 15, 2014, 03:21:59 PM
I prefer paint! but thats me!
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Bruce on May 15, 2014, 04:40:14 PM
Paint on frame for sure..I may send the tank and fenders for powder ..not sure.
Right now we are trying to add the bracing on the bottom where they usually have a diagonal jabbed against the engine....do it a little different...maybe lower the foot pads an inch and run straight under before angling outward.  Well gain a bit of width there and room for taller legged people without looking hunched.
So....lower about an inch and move em out a few...that and the mini high rise handlebar from the ambassador should make it more comfy.... That's the plan anyhow for tommorow
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Bruce on May 16, 2014, 02:58:54 PM
Okay...one bike has these now..dropped an inch and mostly follow the frame angle at the rear...level after that and pushed out to the crash bar width.....next we are sliding the seat back 3-4"..... I'll post pics of the other bike and how men wanted his done in a bit
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Ricks on May 16, 2014, 03:01:33 PM
Bruce, are you going to add braces to triangulate the frame?
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Bruce on May 16, 2014, 04:49:45 PM
You mean the two on top behind the seat?.. I don't like em but maybe...and I've seen trucks without the right side lower triangle so I'm guessing they used the crashbars for footpad mounts....if it needs more I can't tell yet....it is rather rigid now
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Ricks on May 16, 2014, 05:16:33 PM
The reason no right side lower is it would interfere with the kick start.  IMHO, and I have built several roll cages for drag cars, you need triangulation for strength.

Stand on one side of that frame and see how much it flexes.
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Bruce on May 17, 2014, 04:18:06 AM
Its gonna hafta flex a lot before I add the bottom ones different.  We are copying an original one soon too so that'll have the triangles and crunched seating

Post by: Bruce on May 18, 2014, 04:05:08 PM
One thing I noticed on both handlebar plates...they're not very straight and are slightly turned...is this a prob with a lot or just these? does anyone know what triple tree top might fit these forks? Clamp type
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Bruce on May 22, 2014, 03:19:15 PM
Kinda tested this chassis today...rolled it down a hill ..pushed it around some...it is steadier then I thought one would be...full on turns didn't bother it...and its alot more comfy with the seat moved back

Post by: pd on May 24, 2014, 05:26:58 PM
Bruce ,

The bar plate on my '57 ( straight sided ) fits nicely . Bar is straight when fastened .
Looks like you're making decent headway on those trucks .

Pete . :)

Bruce, are you going to put a tailgate on it?  If you don't, I think everything you put in the back will be left behind!  Lol
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: kartjockey on June 07, 2014, 04:52:08 AM
I love your work Bruce. A tailgate with Simplex pressed into it  would definitely be something to consider. It would give it the WOW factor!
Title: Re: double trouble

Not a full height one but yes...little chains and all like a mason dump etc

Any progress Bruce?  You and Ken only have 3 weeks to get them running
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Bruce on June 25, 2014, 02:16:54 PM
Progress is slow really..everything I do I turn around and do to the other bike...takes awhile.
The beds are mostly done and I made mounts and plates to hold in the flooring today. After adding the footpads mine will be ready to blast and prime..
Engines should be easy to put on then there's doing two drives..shafts clutches etc.
I think I'll slap my wheel back on my whizzer and maybe bring that to Portland.
I'm gonna be in Indiana anyway house shopping.

I have been contemplating a  SIMPLEX die for those tail gates.  Just for kicks how long would the word have to be to look right on the gate?  And how tall?
Title: Re: double trouble

That would be cool!
Title: Re: double trouble

I'll measure the name later but the gate is 33" on that build.  Maybe real ones are different

Looks like these guys could emboss a tail gate easy enough. Any material. Any size.

I'm moved in now but have been slow getting to the bikes in the garage. Today I dropped off my seat pan at a place that does Harley's etc...he's doing it in black leather. The lights I have yet to install but I'll get pics of them on tomm.   Sorry I've been slow responding or participating here.

I like the wide 'edge' . Looks good with the truck box .

I'm not so sure about the purple piping , though . But , maybe it's not purple ?

Title: Re: double trouble

Ah ... Better red than purple .

I've noticed other instances where my monitor shows a color not true to reality .

How did they back that edge so it will hold form ?

Pete . :)

I don't know...all I did was drop it off and pick it up...it has foam that's shaped I believe ?
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: pd on October 28, 2014, 08:27:25 PM
Must be some fairly hardy foam . The seat pan edge seems sharp enough to wear any foam pretty quick .

Maybe they installed some kind of edge 'trim' to help keep that from happening .

Pete . :)

My benches are built in the garage and we got a new welder...I'm going to make up the brake  rods and mounts for it next and get busy.
What I wish I had....one of those new mustang motorcycle engines...those are cool puppies.   Villiers...kinda like those too

Fits in there nice.  How are you planning on starting it?  Is that an old whizzer motor, or a new reproduction?
Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Bruce on September 08, 2015, 08:42:51 PM
It's a newer one...electric start, I'll be using from an 2008 ambassador.  This engine has had some port and chamber work done to the upper end,it's pretty strong.

I'm putting around Portland with this next summer no matter what.  It's now front and center in the shop.  I acquired an Albion 3sp with reverse and might rethink the install of engine but I'm tired of it setting there.

Bruce, are you going to work on Ken's also?
If he brings it, yes.  I just acquired an Albion 3sp with reverse so I'm rethinking my engine choice etc. As you know the Albion has a clutch and kickstarter.  I won't need the kickstart, but I think the rest will be nice.
So, I grabbed up another 212 from the man store...I'll post pics more frequently now..and I'd like to make Portland with it.

Title: Re: double trouble
Post by: Bruce on December 30, 2016, 05:40:18 AM
Yes...I installed one on a 2008 whizzer ambassador and that ones got around 3000 on it with its current owner. You need an intake made, but it's not difficult and maybe a different exhaust attachment, easy also.
Btw that bike with a TAV was fast and ran great always. This don't need speed...reverse is gonna be nice though.
