The way I ran wires to taillight and brake switch!
« on: April 06, 2014, 04:05:23 PM »
I just didn't like having the wires exposed running to the taillight iand to the brake light switch I thought it looked pretty crappy sorry to all the purest out there but I think this looks way better...

I think that is absolutely ingenious... does light wire from the mag still route thru the upper tube? If not how do you get the wires from the mag to the tube that you added? I am in the process of running wires also...mind if I use this process as well?

That is just for the taillight and brake light wires...the 2wires for those coming out of the mag- Go straight up to underneath the fuel tank then go down through that hole in the tube by where the spring goes for the  clutch then down the tube and I made a small hole in the edge of that cap that snaps into that frame tube then I have 2 holes in that tube that I made 1wire goes to tail light and other goes to brake switch then ii ran the other wire from the other side of brake switch back through the tube to brake light- I have one of Wayne's reproduction t-lights w 2 bulbs in it because they don't make those 3 candle power duel filament bulbs any more for the original T-lights

Thanks! I also used heat shrink tube to cover the exposed wires and then i put some heat shrink over the terminal ends so they kind of blend in and look kind of original...those bright blue wire terminals stick out like crazy if you ask me!

Agreed . Very tidy . Looks like it's suppose to be that way .

Flipping the switch connections down and inward would clean it up even more , if there's room .

I didn't care for the separate wires running back , either . I basically did the same as you except I used flexible smooth plastic thin wall wire tube / sheath and ran it inside the fender brace to the tail light .

Pete . :)

I used a cut off wheel in the dremel to cut off the blue plastic from all my terminals, then used a industrial crimper to crimp them to the wires (versus just smashing them).  I then use short pieces of heat shrink tubing to make the terminal look like original equipment.

The original clips run the wires to the tail lite behind the brace, but as you've seen, the brake light wires were run exposed originally.  The problem is made worse since we can't get the original switch (the body of the switch would face the rear).  With the switch that's available the wires have to be several inches longer.

Relic ,

I confiscated the tubing I used from a jet ski wiring harness .

Not sure you can see it , but i used a more modern 'bullet' type brake switch . It has the terminals reward .

I had talked to Wayne and he told me my 57 had originally came with a Cole-Hersee 9071 brake light switch witch he said were no longer available they actually are pulled open and when you step on the brake it it comes back to make contact to complete the circuit...I did some digging and actually found 3 of them in a vintage auto parts warehouse by me...if anyone needs one i have 2 left...I am going to see Wayne this next weekend and he will have them then.

Can you post a picture?  What years did Simplex use this one?  Any idea what the other part number is for the other years?
