My Sportsman bears the number 17973.  Earnies sportsman is about 800 later.

You need to get Ernie's number, as that would be the highest number ever found!  So far the highest is 18186.

My Sportsman is slightly older than yours Tom, as it is number 17956.

Pics to go with the serial number I posted above.  Plus the custom engine that came with it.  Billet crank with no intake hole.  I gave a billet aluminum side cover to go wit it.  This guy did awesome work.  I think the original handlebars are on the blue bike. They have the twin holes for the throttle U-pin. This guy was a Yamaha man and incorporated a neat flywheel on it also. Front hub is not original but looks like it at first glance and that mouth watering speedo isn't original either!  I have the original front hub.

Tom, that thing is wild!  What is the cylinder from?  Is it using a Reed valve?  It looks like he welded a piece of square tube for the carburetor?  The rod looks huge!  More motor pictures please!

Nice find , Tom .

Awesome work is right .

The cylinder and head are likely from a more modern motor with a squarish fin design and milled down to the current rounded appearance . That rod may have come from the same motor . He did very nice work , incorporating that reed induction .
I'm curious about what flywheel and pickup that is .

Will you be taking the top end apart ? If so , please post pics of the head chamber , piston ( top , skirts and  inside ) and cylinder ports , Please .

You probably haven't taken a compression reading .

I wonder how much difference in weight the crank , rod and piston assembly is from OEM .

I am planning on finding out if it will.  And Reese,  the mortgage can wait!!  LoL  Looks like a 56mm bore(2.204) X  66mm stroke(2.598).  Maybe about 11 cubic inches then.  When I roll it over it blows my finger off of the hole.

56 mm bore is the same as the Yamaha 125s .

But the transfer ports would be a problem ...

Sounds like it has decent compression .
