engine/ generator
« on: July 31, 2016, 01:35:46 PM »
can any one please tell me what generator my engine should have if it is a 1957/58 as the frame.
the reason I ask is that the last owner has told me he has found the wico generator that came with the bike but does not think it is the proper one as it does not fit the crank properly and is to big to go in the cover. he has not sent it to me yet so I can not see for myself. thanks.

How can it not fit the crank properly ? No or different bearing ?

Your motor probably had a Phelon magneto , as they were introduced in 1956 . What is the measurement of your cover ?

I believe the Phelon takes a cover of about 7 1/4" ( 184.15 mm ) inside diameter .
I don't know how the Wico differs .

Eric, I know you said the number is 17090, but is it possible that what you think is a 1 as the first number is actually a 0, that was an offset strike?  The reason I ask, is everything on your bike points to 1953.  The wico magneto the guy says he has would even be correct for 1953.  I was speaking to another one of our members at Portland last week, and he is certain it is a 1953 model.  Please take a good closeup picture of the clutch bracket from both sides and post it here.  1953 and 1954 used a bracket that changed in 1955.

Thanks,

Rick

Rick all I can do is say its all my fault . I must need new glasses or my brain needs a good kick, have just put it upside down again and sprayed white primer on the number then when dry gently flatted it of .what did I find ? I had written the number down completely backwards.as you say it starts with a 0.it is 09071. the register has it as 1955   the wife keeps telling me its old age that makes me do these stupid things. who am I to argue with her when we have been married for almost 57 years.       thanks every body    eric

Ha . Don't feel lonely , Eric . That same happens to me more times than I care to admit . Including the wife saying some such .
So , I learned to measure twice and cut once . And still , I get it wrong , sometimes . ;)

Late 1954 or early 1955. Simplex's numbering system wasn't the greatest.  The wico magneto is correct.  When you get it, post some pictures so we can see what is going on.  Everything should be an easy bolt on, unless someone installed the wrong stator bearing.

There is what looks like a magneto plate on the right side of the motor . Could you post some detailed pics of that , please ?

Not to beat a horse to death but if the 9 was actually a 6 it would chime in with all of the features that support it being a 1953. Then perhaps it was sold later and titled at time of sale.

That transmission bracket is 1953-1954 I believe.  I think they went to the offset style bracket in 1955.

Ah . I seem to recall you'd said something about possibly adapting a Villers magneto , or some such .
