h11071
« on: March 20, 2017, 07:14:48 PM »
Just a question to those who know more than me, I have a simplex, H11071 I bought couple years back from a guy who bought it from a guy who got it at the Wollard auction.  Started to restore and really had a lot of other things come up am considering selling it has everything except the muffler and air breather. It did run before I got going. I have the frame ,front end, luggage rack and several of the smaller parts striped and painted left the pits and sprayed with can had the idea that I wanted to preserve not restore. Now the question I really want to keep this bike whole but it seems like they bring more $ parted out is this true, and would like opinions on worth. I took detailed pictures but cant get them to load will keep trying thanks. Rich

Hi Rich,

I posted my bike for sale and it seems no one here wants my bike. I'll be parting it out soon. Seems that parts sell well on ebay. Hope you have better luck.

You are right, these bikes are usually worth more parted out.  That said, I personally find that distasteful.  I think any bike that has managed to remain intact for 60-70 years deserves better than to be broken up so one can make an extra couple hundred bucks.  I have restored three bikes back to better than new in the last five years, and have also done a mechanical restoration on another.  These bikes are part of history, and that's why most of us here do it.

Henry, as I said before, if you put a price on it, you may get offers.

I second the Long island guy.  Cuts this ole iron lover to the quick!

Now.  After studying my brochures, three 'Servi-cycling' issues which were published in 1941, and new info for the registry.  Plus several photos from a bike at Portland last year many were calling 1941. (Still have to zoom in on picture of engine to get number from it).  I believe Henry's bike is late 1940.  Mostly from the heel brake ending then and that I have a motor number on the registry slightly before that of Henry's.  Bob53 said a mouthful when he said dating these early bikes can be tricky.  The 1940 brochure  blows my mind. It shows a mixture of things including the front drop-down kick stand.  The brake was clearly changing quickly and the clutch was coming on fast.

So much of what was happening at Simplex could only be understood from 'Tribal Knowledge'.  Being there and living it.  That being said...and based on all of my literature findings and without speculation this is my conclusion.

I agree and would like to keep it together. And, I added a 2nd post with pics and a price of$2,250. Hope I get some responses or at least counter offers.

I think you are in the ballpark. I know of a running Automatic that is for sale by another older gentleman in Connecticut for around the same money.  Good luck with the sale!

480  640 is about the perfect size.  Just makes them a little larger but not so large you have to scroll around
